A passionate dog trainer set out to fundraise for canine lymphoma after his own beloved pup passed. Then, after many rounds of treatment and years of research, he was shocked to discover that 50% of dog owners don’t know dogs can get cancer. Now, eight years later, Terry finds himself the founder of CLEAR, a  501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to providing information, resources, and research into canine cancer. And this week, the foundation’s third documentary, My Friend: Standing Strong premieres. Terry has come a long way from his initial mission, but as he sits down with me to talk about this documentary, it’s plain to see that CLEAR is just getting started.

One CLEAR mission

Through a variety of mediums, CLEAR educates people on different types of canine cancers. A true support group, this foundation offers all of its resources for free on their website. From research to documentaries and exchanging stories of hope, CLEAR provides a super accessible community of support for dog owners facing canine lymphoma. But the foundation doesn’t stop at their online presence. In fact, CLEAR hosts pop-up talks around the US to educate people on their research. According to Terry, their talks feel more like town halls, as people are encouraged to participate and ask questions.

This foundation exists to spread awareness and empower dog owners to research canine lymphoma. CLEAR hopes to assist in finding a cure for canine lymphoma. But in the meantime, their mission is to inspire and educate owners through documentaries and workshops.

My Friend: Standing Strong

This documentary is about canine osteosarcoma (OSA), the most common bone cancer occurring in dogs. The film bridges the perspectives of veterinarians and owners, providing insight into treatment options and documenting healing journeys– both human and canine alike.

And while Standing Strong addresses a specific type of cancer, the story of hope and resilience is universal. Although the topic of canine cancer is never easy, this movie contains moments of laughter and joy (and likely a good cry or two). But most importantly, you will come away with a greater understanding of treatment options and perspective.

My Friend: Standing Strong premieres Sunday, June 23rd during a free screening at The Beverly Hills Laemmle. Don’t miss out on this inspiring story and free event!
